========== Kofoto FAQ ========== .. contents:: .. sectnum:: ----- General ======= Where is the documentation? --------------------------- Apart from these wiki pages, there is no documentation (yet). Sorry. But feel free to document things at the wiki! Where does the name "Kofoto" come from? --------------------------------------- "Kofoto" literally means "cow photo" (in other words: photograph of a cow) in Swedish, but it's also a play with words since the word is comprised of four existing Swedish words: 1. ko (which means cow) 2. fot (which means foot) 3. kofot (which means crowbar) 4. foto (which means photo) gkofoto ======= The use of the Categories Tree tab ---------------------------------- Help! I cannot search, and my image categories changes! Ok, keep calm. What you see is a tree, with checkboxes. If you press a ''checkbox'', you will toggle that category on the selected image. But, you can select the rows. You can select more rows! Click on the category ''names'' you want to search, and press the Search button above. Depending on the radiobox next to the Search button, you will get a query string just below the file menu, and your result will be on the right side. You can fine tune your query (which can be a more complex one) and press Enter to see the result. Of what use is the "Quick select" tab? -------------------------------------- The quick select tab is meant to be used for quick categorization of images. This is mainly useful when you have a lot of categories so that the category tree is much larger than the screen. After selecting one image (or several), you can switch to the quick select tab and can type the first couple of characters of the category you want to add to the image(s). Then you can press return and start writing the next category name. And so on. This is much quicker than locating the categories in a large category tree. Miscellaneous ============= Where can I find jpegtran? -------------------------- jpegtran comes with libjpeg_ in source code form. Debian users can find it in the libjpeg-progs_ package. A Windows binary is available here: http://sylvana.net/jpegcrop/jpegtran.exe. If you don't know where to put it, try your Windows directory. .. _libjpeg: http://www.ijg.org .. _libjpeg-progs: http://packages.debian.org/libjpeg-progs How do I make Kofoto aware of images on an off-line storage? ------------------------------------------------------------ Assume you have put a set of images (that have been categorized with Kofoto) on some off-line medium (say a CD-ROM or DVD) and that you want to make Kofoto aware of those images so that they can be searchable and eventually recategorized after inserting the medium into the computer. Here is how to do it: Commandline interface: kofoto update-locations /path/to/medium gkofoto: Choose "File --> Handle modified/moved/renamed images..." and enter the path to the medium. Then try to continue use the dialog dispite its current suckiness...
